What is pumpkin seed oil?
The green gold from the heart of the Styrian* pumpkin (cucurpita pepo var. styriaca)
The Styrian pumpkin
The Styrian
pumpkin was cultivated from the common pumpkin at
the beginning of the 20th century. This pumpkin has olive
to darkgreen coloured vertical stripes which fade as the
pumpkin ripens. The seeds are dark-green in colour and
covered with a transparently thin skin, making them
unique in that they are naturally hulled. On average
there are about 1000 seeds per pumpkin.
The Styrian
pumpkin has been exported to many countries of the world
including Australia where it grows wonderfully. The ideal
climatic weather conditions, long sunny days and rich
soil see the pumpkins grow much larger than their cousins
in Austria.
The oil
The
oil that is pressed from the seeds is a deep dark-green colour and has a
subtle, nutty taste. This is unique to the Styrian pumpkin and loved all over
the world. In Austria
the oil is known as the 'green gold' and therefore treasured as such. The oil
is not only a delight for the palate as it provides a variety of health
benefits and is considered a nutrition for life.
